What Is Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) Flooring Installation?
Luxury vinyl plank, or LVP, is a multi-layer synthetic flooring designed to mimic the look of hardwood or tile while standing up to water, scratches, and heavy foot traffic far better than either. It's become one of the most requested materials in Sayreville, NJ for kitchens, basements, and rental properties because it combines durability with a realistic wood-look finish at a lower price point than solid hardwood. Installation quality still matters enormously with LVP: subfloor flatness, click-lock alignment, and correct expansion gaps determine whether the floor stays flat and quiet or develops hollow spots and peaking seams within a year.
Why You Shouldn't Wait
LVP installed over an uneven subfloor will develop hollow-sounding spots and visible seam lines as the planks flex under foot traffic, even though the material itself is rated for durability. Skipping expansion gaps at the walls causes buckling when the floor naturally shifts with temperature changes, a mistake that's especially common with inexperienced DIY installs. Because LVP clicks together in interlocking rows, a single misaligned row early in the install can telegraph a visible drift across an entire room by the time you reach the far wall.
Our Process
Subfloor Leveling
LVP requires a flatter subfloor than most materials, so we identify and correct dips or high spots before installation begins.
Layout Planning
We plan the plank layout to minimize waste, avoid short end pieces at doorways, and keep the pattern looking intentional across the whole room.
Click-Lock Installation
Planks are installed row by row with correct expansion gaps at every wall, checked continually for square alignment.
Transition & Trim Work
Transition strips and trim are fitted at doorways and material changes for a clean, finished edge.
Quality Check
We walk every seam and edge before finishing to catch any hollow spots or misalignment while it's still easy to fix.
What to Expect
Most LVP installations finish in one to three days depending on room size and subfloor condition. Since LVP is largely unaffected by moisture, it's frequently our recommendation for basements and below-grade spaces where other materials carry more risk. You can walk on it immediately after installation with no curing period, and furniture can typically be placed back the same day.
Why Choose SoftStep Surfaces for Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) Flooring Installation
We level subfloors to LVP's tighter flatness tolerance rather than treating it like any other floating floor.
Our layout planning avoids awkward short pieces at doorways that cheaper installs often leave behind.
We stock underlayment options that add sound dampening, a common request for upper-floor LVP installs.
17 years of installation experience means we catch subfloor issues before they become your problem later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most LVP products are fully waterproof at the surface and core layer, making them a strong choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements, though we still recommend wiping up standing water promptly at seams over time.
LVP is a thicker, more rigid multi-layer product with a realistic embossed wood or stone look, while standard vinyl flooring is typically thinner sheet or tile material. LVP generally offers better durability and a more premium appearance.
In many cases yes, as long as the tile is structurally sound and reasonably flat. We'll assess your existing floor during the consultation to confirm it's a suitable base.
Quality LVP typically lasts 15 to 25 years with normal use, and its wear layer resists scratches and fading well, especially in busy households with kids or pets.
It can feel slightly cooler than carpet but is generally warmer than tile, and it pairs well with underlayment options that add both comfort and insulation.
Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and high-traffic living areas are ideal candidates given its water resistance and durability, though it works well throughout most of the home.
